Some Top Tips for Walkers
Here's some advice to help you enjoy the Bridge walk and make it a success!
Before you start:
- Remember to bring your sponsor form. The back of your sponsor form will be used to show you have finished the walk - you will be given a sticker after crossing each bridge, which you should add to your form.
- Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking - it's not a marathon, but it's a bit more than a stroll in the park!
- Make sure you have plenty of water or fruit juice to drink - you will be thankful when you work up a thirst!
- You should also bring a packed lunch - you will probably get hungry around lunch-time and need a bit of an energy boost!
- Bring some 20p pieces - you may well need the toilet at points during the walk and most public toilets cost 20p to use!
- Think about the weather - if it looks like rain, bring a coat! Hopefully, it will be a beautiful sunny day, so remember to protect yourself - bring a hat and sun cream. This is important because you will be out in the sun for a long time.
On the walk:
- BE SAFE:
- You must stay with your school group and teachers during the walk;
- Only use pavements and walkways - stay off the road (unless crossing!);
- Take extra care when crossing roads - watch out for traffic. Be sensible!
- If you get separated from your group, speak to one of our stewards who will be present around every bridge on the walk and will be able to help you.
- Please consider others whilst you complete the walk. There will be many members of the public enjoying a Sunday stroll as well!
- Make sure you get your Bridge sticker and add it to your sheet after you cross each bridge. These are given out by our stewards and will show that you have finished the walk. You should have all ten stickers by the time you're done!
At the end of the walk:
- Give yourself and your friends a pat on the back! You will have just walked 10 km for charity!
- Stay with your school group and follow the instructions of your teacher for how to get home or back to school.
- Be proud of what you have achieved and start the process of collecting the sponsorship money people have offered you. When you have collected all the money,pass it on to your teacher at school.
- Tell people you have helped to build a new secondary school for hundreds of youngsters, just like you, in Uganda. You may want to speak to your teacher about how you can continue to help in the future - get thinking!
- PEAS says THANK-YOU!
