Bridges to Africa to expand to Manchester & Birmingham in 2009

PEAS is currently working with partners in Birmingham and Manchester to plan the expansion of the event to those two cities in 2009. We hope to have over 2500 students and teachers from 80 different schools across the country taking part in the event. We are still finalising plans for the expansion - and we'll have more details soon, so watch this space - teachers can register schools online here.

Nearly 2000 students and teachers walk Bridges to Africa 2008

On Sunday 11th May, 2000 students and their teachers from 50 UK schools came together to successfully complete the Bridges to Africa sponsored walk through Central London. PEAS is hugely grateful to everybody who took part in the walk over 10 bridges of the Thames to help PEAS build a new secondary school in Uganda. The atmosphere was fantastic thanks to the spirit and enthusiasm of those taking part. And the weather was BEAUTIFUL! See some photos from the day here.

The first school groups prepare to set off on the 2008 walk - we were lucky to have such a beautiful day!

Jon Snow in a PEA outfit for...PEAS!

Last May, Channel 4 news presenter, Jon Snow, and students from the City of London Academy came together to help promote Bridges to Africa and PEAS.

Jon dressed up in a peas costume for a photoshoot with students on the Millenium bridge. PEAS thanks him and all the students for making it happen.

Jon said "I enthusiastically support the Bridges to Africa initiative. This is an organic, student-to-student action that has the potential to provide real support from North to South in a meaningful and productive relationship that has the potential to thread through whole lifetimes.

"PEAS is not just talking about co-operation and development, it is DOING it."

THANKS JON!

The First Bridges to Africa event -
launched by Gordon Brown in 2006

The first ever Bridges to Africa was held on Sunday 7th May 2006.

The day involved 700 students from 25 different schools across London completing the walk. Gordon Brown launched the event and joined the walk over the first bridge.

The students raised nearly £20,000 to help us build a new, affordable secondary school.
